I am delighted to be adding Parenting Skills to my Coaching programs. If there is not a class available when you would like to learn effective ways of communicating and having warm relationships with with your children, I encourage you to consider individual or couples coaching.

I am a parent myself - my three sons are now all in their 40's and in addition to being my children, they are also my best friends.

Would you agree that there is nothing more rewarding - and challenging - than being a parent? I've felt the successes over the years of "Yes, I think I'm a good parent"; I have also had the times when I felt I should have a sign hanging around my neck that says "I know I'm a failure as a parent; I'll tell you before you tell me."

I don't know anything about being a perfect parent or having perfect children but I do know what it takes to build warm relationships, imperfect though they may be as well.

So why am I offering this now?

For many years, I taught Dr. Thomas Gordon's Parent Effectiveness Training, still the best parenting skills I know. When I started traveling with my consulting and teaching in the education and corporate arenas, I had to stop - but my heart has always been with families and remains so today.

Recently, a woman from one of my first P.E.T. classes asked me if I would please teach it again, that it had changed her life and now her daughter and friend needed it as well. I said to her "You get the people and I'll teach the class" - and she did and I did.

Teaching it again after 20 years and again seeing the difference it made for the parents who attended (from 2 1/2 year old twins to 17 year old teenagers) warmed my heart and reminded me of how I love teaching these skills to parents.

I decided that not only will I have another class in the spring, I'll coach parents on how they can use these classic skills of parenting.

Being a parent is a wonderful opportunity and blessing. But it can also be full of heartaches and tears of frustration. Most parents have never learned how to parent so they follow their parent's example. This approach is not always skillful - and being a good parent does take skills. You can learn parenting skills that work - and I can coach you how to do them.

Effective Parenting is based on Dr. Thomas Gordon's P.E.T. and Dr. William Glasser's Reality Therapy, a very powerful combination of communication skills.

My classes/coaching will help you to make a commitment to find better ways to ...

* listen and encourage your children to talk and share openly and
honestly

* guide them in taking responsibility for their own actions

* meet your own needs without placing blame and damaging your
child's self esteem

* resolve conflict so that relationships between parents and children are
actually enhanced and closer harmony achieved through the difficulties

* influence your children's values

I will coach you to build skills in communication by focusing on several key areas of competence: listening; effective confrontation; creative problem solving; win/win conflict resolution of both needs and values.

A special feature I am offering is an on-line (or paper) personal profile. It will help you in looking at your own behavioral style, as well as your children's, therefore assisting you to learn new ways to interact more effectively. Different equals different; it does not equal wrong. We tend to communicate with all people (and that includes our children!) the same way and that can be up to 75% ineffective because of the different styles.
